Yield, supply pressure and rent levels across 393 US metro areas. Click a state to see its metros, a metro to see its ZIPs, then a ZIP for the detail behind the colour. Every figure carries the date its publisher released it.

MethodologyData status

Sample data

The data pipeline has not run yet, so these figures are generated rather than measured. The metro names, the metro and ZIP boundaries and the state memberships are real, from Census TIGERweb. The figures are not, at either grain: they are generated so the map can be built and reviewed, and no number on this page should be used for a decision until the pipeline has run.

Layer

A year of rent as a percentage of the home value. Gross: nothing is netted out for taxes, insurance, management, vacancy or maintenance.

Basis ACS median gross rent, includes utilities; ACS median home value, self-reported. 393 of 393 metros carry both series. Nothing is hatched on this basis, and where a metro is missing a series on another basis it is left hatched rather than filled in from a different measurement, because mixing two bases would make the ranking an artifact of Zillow's coverage rather than of the housing market.

Layer Coloured for 393 of 393 metros, 0 hatched.

Three sheets: the shortlist with every measure, a provenance sheet giving the publisher and the publication date of every single figure, and a notes sheet recording which basis was used and how far it reaches. Pin metros to export those instead of the top of the ranking.

    Ranked

    393 metros, gross rent yield

The same national ranking the map is coloured by, in a form you can read straight through. A column header re-ranks the table. Metros with no value for the sorted measure appear last in either direction and never at the top.

US metro areas ranked by gross rent yield, highest first. Metros with no value for the sorted measure appear last in either direction and are marked n/a. Column headers re-rank the table, and each metro row carries a pin control for the comparison below.
